Better still, we could Skype and enjoy better call quality than the POTS will ever deliver. Skype still has stuff to work on in interfacing with external (non-IP) systems - but these guys are fast learners and lead the race. Nuff said - Skype is the simple piece of software (thespos) that lets you make free phone calls anytime, anywhere. Skype me mate, without technological overkill gernaine greer would be in the kitchen washing dishes and clothes and i'd be writing romantic novels.

In response to:Full circle

Your experience of skype is misleading I think. The Internet Protocol, like the old X25 is a packet switched protocol, voice communication needs permanent virtual circuits if the call is no...........ound......this whenever the network load gets above 20%. So the massive upgrade in capacity required will mean costs have to be recovered, and so we will pay for our calls in some way. And if that is to be the case, the current phone system works just fine.
There's a 1970s phrase we should revive, Technological Overkill. Recently someone was astounded that I don't have an i-pod yet. But I have an excellent hi - fi and a good car radio so why should I want to listen to sounds compressed by a lossey format on a tinny little sqwak box?
I think VOIP is another former future Next Best Thing.

In response to:Full circle

MAY THE NEW YEAR BE A VERY HAPPY ONE FOR YOU
